National Data Privacy Day

News

Jan. 27, 2023

National Data Privacy Day is a day created to raise awareness about privacy issues and to offer tips and information as to how to keep your personal data safe online.

As more and more of our devices are connected and share information about us, privacy is increasingly important. There are many things that you can do to help protect your privacy and limit how you share your information with others. National Data Privacy Day is the perfect time to review some of those steps you can take.

Here are five data privacy tips that you can implement today:

  1. Know what’s on your device. Do an inventory of all the applications that are on your devices and consider deleting what you don’t use. Holding on to unused accounts that contain private data can become unsafe when you’re no longer monitoring them.
  2. Protect your IDs and passwords. Create and manage account IDs and strong passwords with a secure Password Manager.
  3. Check the privacy settings. Download apps from reliable sources and pay attention to desktop and mobile app permissions for privacy policies and unwarranted data collection when you install them. It’s a good idea to check the privacy settings of apps, devices, and online accounts periodically, especially when terms change.
  4. Make sure applications and software are up to date. This includes your apps, web browsers, and operating systems. Set updates to happen automatically. Updates contain security and vulnerability fixes that can keep you safe.
  5. Check the security of your home router. Make sure you’re using a router that has WPA2 or WPA3 encryption to protect the information you share over your wireless network. Public Wi-Fi is not secure, so take precautions if you need to use a public Wi-Fi hotspot, such as using a personal VPN.
