Important note regarding the Zelle standalone app

Digital BankingNews

Jan. 06, 2025

In an effort to improve functionality and user experience, Zelle’s standalone app will no longer be able to send or receive money after March 31, 2025. To continue using Zelle, users must enroll through their financial institution mobile app.

If you are currently enrolled in Zelle through our FMB mobile app, no action on your end is required. The standalone app will be available after March 31st, but it will be used for consumer education about scams and frauds. It will also provide a list of banks and credit unions that offer Zelle.

FAQs

I’ve heard people are no longer able to send and receive money using the Zelle® standalone app that can be downloaded from the app store. I use Zelle® at FMB – what does that mean for me?

If you are enrolled with Zelle® through FMB, you do not need to take any action. You can continue using Zelle® to send and receive money with people or small businesses who use Zelle® through their bank or credit union. If you previously sent money to, or received money from, someone who used the standalone Zelle® app, they’ll need to re-enroll with Zelle® through a bank or credit union that offers Zelle® to continue using the service after March 31, 2025. Until they re-enroll, you will no longer be able to send or receive payment from these users.

I use Zelle® in my banking app, but my friend uses the standalone Zelle® app. How can I continue to send and receive money with my friend?

The standalone Zelle® app will be available to users until March 31, 2025. After that date, users will no longer be able to send or receive money using the standalone Zelle® app. To continue using Zelle®, people must enroll with Zelle® through one of the more than 2,200 banks and credit unions that offer Zelle®. Send your friend this link https://enroll.zellepay.com so they can see if their bank or credit union offers Zelle®.

What will happen to my pending payments?

If the person you’re sending money to hasn’t enrolled with Zelle® yet, they’ll receive an email or text notification letting them know you’ve sent them money. They’ll be guided through a few simple steps to get enrolled. If the recipient doesn’t enroll in Zelle® within 14 days, the payment will expire, and the funds will be returned to your account. Starting January 8, 2025, if the person does not bank at one of the more than 2,200 banks and credit unions that offer Zelle®, the person will not be able to enroll in Zelle® and the pending payment will expire.

I sent a payment request to someone who uses the Zelle® standalone app, but I heard the standalone Zelle® app is going away. Will I still be able to receive my money using Zelle®?

Users enrolled in the standalone Zelle® app will be able to respond to payment requests and send money until March 31, 2025. After that date, payments can only be made by users enrolled through one of the more than 2,200 banks and credit unions that offer Zelle®. Any outstanding payment requests to the standalone Zelle® app users will expire.
